THINGS TO DO

Activities & Attractions in Morgan County

Fishing & Boating

Morgan County is the focal point of all outdoor recreation on the largest lake in the region, the 67,100-acre, approximately 60-mile-long Wheeler Reservoir on the Tennessee River. In addition to our residents enjoying this amenity year round, we’re proud to host numerous fishing tournaments. There are four marinas and easy-to-access launch facilities.

Sports & Recreation

Our cities and towns maintain and operate many quality facilities for youth and adult sports, including softball, tennis, baseball, basketball, and soccer. Residents also enjoy several swimming and water recreation facilities, the largest among them the waterpark and Point Mallard Park in Decatur and the Hartselle Aquatic Center. Morgan County is home to two public golf courses, Point Mallard Golf Course and Quail Creek Golf Resort, and one private, Burningtree Country Club.

Arts, Science & Nature

Morgan County is surrounded by beautiful natural assets, including the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge and the North Alabama Birding Trail. It’s no wonder that inspiration translates into an intersection of nature and the arts, along with top-notch attractions for exploring them all. USA Today readers voted Decatur’s Cook Museum of Natural Science as the top new museum in the nation. The city is also home to the Carnegie Visual Arts Center, Alabama Center for the Arts, and the Princess Theatre for Performing Arts.

Learn About Local History

Morgan County has a rich cultural history to explore, with trails and destinations that take people back in time exploring critical events that brought us to where we are today. These include The Trail of Tears Interpretive Route, the African American Walking Tour, Decatur’s Old State Bank, historic walking tours of the state’s largest Victorian-era residential districts in Decatur, and historic train depots in downtown Hartselle and Decatur.
