Morgan County is the focal point of all outdoor recreation on the largest lake in the region, the 67,100-acre, approximately 60-mile-long Wheeler Reservoir on the Tennessee River. In addition to our residents enjoying this amenity year round, we’re proud to host numerous fishing tournaments. There are four marinas and easy-to-access launch facilities.
Morgan County is surrounded by beautiful natural assets, including the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge and the North Alabama Birding Trail. It’s no wonder that inspiration translates into an intersection of nature and the arts, along with top-notch attractions for exploring them all. USA Today readers voted Decatur’s Cook Museum of Natural Science as the top new museum in the nation. The city is also home to the Carnegie Visual Arts Center, Alabama Center for the Arts, and the Princess Theatre for Performing Arts.
There’s always an event on the calendar to suit just about every interest throughout the county and throughout the year. A few of our largest and best-known events by community include:
Festival of the Cranes, Carnegie Carnival, 3rd Friday Downtown, Dragon Boat Races, The Alabama Jubilee Hot-Air Balloon Classic, Daikin Japanese Festival, Spirit of America Festival, Riverfest, River Clay Fine Arts Festival, Christmas Tour of Homes, Parade of Lights
Cotton Pickin’ BBQ Cook-Off, Hartselle Depot Days, Christmas Tour of Homes
Racking Horse Spring & World Celebrations, Alabama Charity Championship Horse Show
For details on these events and others, see the official Decatur Morgan County Tourism Events Calendar.
